Spring break is usually a much anticipated week off for kids and some adults who are traveling to fun destinations. However, for those of us staying at home for spring break wanting to save money, it can be a full week of hearing the dreaded, “I’m so bored!” over and over again.
We’ve got you covered. Here are some fun ideas on how to have an enjoyable week off without breaking the bank.
Family Bake-Off
First, have everyone in the family decide on a meal or sweet treat that they’d like to try to make. Because the little ones can have help from mom and dad or an older sibling, this can be a great group activity. Have the family score each and at the end of the week you’ll not only have a family food champion, but you’ll have made some great memories and meals along the way! All while saving money on not eating out.
Scavenger Hunt
Another great idea for fun is a scavenger hunt. You can make this as involved or simple as you would like. If you’d like to make it a little more interesting, set it up ahead of time and have scavenger points all around town. To save money you could get dollar store prizes for the winners or involve your friends and family and pool money together to come up with a bigger prize.
Indoor Camping
Although it might still be a bit chilly to camp outside, get creative and move it indoors. Not only will it save money on not having to pay for gas or camp sites, but it will be memorable for your kids. Set up a tent inside, or just make a cool fort your kids can sleep in. Make s’mores, play card games, tell stories, and drink hot chocolate.
Plant Seeds
Not only is planting seeds fun for kids, it can be very educational. Have kids keep an observation journal to track their seeds’ progress along the way. Talk about where seeds come from and what it takes for a plant to grow. There are many online resources for fun lesson plans involving growing plants. Make sure to pick a fast-growing seed so your little ones won’t lose interest and so they’ll be ready to bring it outside once it gets a bit nicer. The best part about this project is how easy it is to do while saving money.
